A FIREFIGHTER from Longridge will be among a team of athletes representing their country in the race for gold medal glory.
The 16 men and women from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have signed up to take part in the World Firefighters Games this week.
They will be battling it out in events including athletics, swimming, football, table tennis, fishing and poker at the games in Liverpool.
And the highlight of the week will be the toughest firefighter alive, in which competitors will be tested on strength, agility and stamina.
Representing the red rose county will be firefighter Alan Metcalf from Longridge, of Preston fire station's Red Watch, in the half-marathon.
Alan, 47, has been running for 25 years and is a member of Preston Harriers Athletics Club, racing all over the UK.
He has previously competed in seven London Marathons, eight Great North Runs and tough marathons in Snowdonia and the Lake District.
He has been battling injury in recent weeks, but was confident of his chances in Walton Hall Park in the race due to be held yesterday (Tuesday).
He said: "I'm not at my best because I've sprained my ankle, but I'm going to give it everything I've got representing Great Britain.
"I'm very proud to be representing the fire service."
Alan may also be called to take part in the four-man 5km indoor rowing competition at the Liverpool Arena later in the week, and is currently on standby.
The games are held every two years and previous competitions have taken place in New Zealand, Las Vegas and Sheffield.
The games, which run until September 2, were officially opened by Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe on Monday.
